Fixing an error on your credit report in Canada: the dispute, and how long it takes

A credit report error dispute in Canada: the route at both bureaus, what an investigation can and cannot reach, and how long a correction takes.

A completed paper form and an envelope on a table

Most of what sits on a credit file cannot be argued with. Payments were late or they were not, and time is the only treatment. A dispute is the exception: the one lever on the whole list that can move a file in weeks rather than years, and it is free.

It only works on one thing, and being clear about that saves a great deal of wasted effort. A dispute corrects what is inaccurate. It does not remove what is accurate and unwelcome. What a genuinely damaged file changes about an application is on bad credit car loans; this is about the part that is simply wrong.

What counts as an error

More than people assume. The commonest, roughly in order:

  • An account you do not recognise at all
  • A balance that is wrong, particularly on something you closed
  • A collection that was settled and still shows outstanding
  • An account included in a bankruptcy or a completed consumer proposal that still shows a balance owing
  • A late payment recorded in a month you paid on time
  • Duplicate entries for one debt, usually after it changed hands
  • Personal details belonging to somebody else, which usually means two files have been merged
  • A hard inquiry from a business you never applied to

The last two are worth taking seriously rather than shrugging at. Both can indicate that somebody else's history, or somebody else's activity, has attached itself to your name.

How to dispute a credit report error, at both bureaus

Get the current consumer disclosure first, from both. You are going to quote it, and there is no point disputing something on a copy from last spring. The routes for obtaining it are in how to read your own credit report.

Then, at each bureau separately:

  1. File the dispute. Online through the bureau's own dispute form, by telephone, or by post. Identify the account precisely, using the reference on the disclosure.
  2. Say what is wrong in one sentence. Not the history of the relationship. The specific field, and what it should say instead.
  3. Attach the proof. A statement showing a zero balance, a settlement letter, a Certificate of Full Performance, a Certificate of Discharge, a payment confirmation. A dispute with a document attached moves considerably faster than one without.
  4. Keep the reference number and the date you filed.

What happens next, and how long

The bureau contacts whoever furnished the information and asks them to verify it. The furnisher confirms, corrects, or fails to respond. Where the record cannot be verified, it comes off.

Both bureaus describe an investigation as taking about thirty days, and provincial consumer reporting legislation sets the framework for it. Last checked 8 August 2026. In practice, a straightforward dispute with a document attached often closes faster, and a contested one against a creditor that no longer exists can run considerably longer.

You are entitled to be told the outcome in writing.

What a dispute cannot reach

Three limits, stated plainly, because the credit-repair industry is built on being vague about them.

Accurate negative information stays. No dispute removes a late payment that happened, a repossession that happened, or an insolvency that was filed. Anybody promising otherwise is describing either a temporary removal that reappears on the next report, or fraud.

The reporting clock does not reset. Paying or settling a collection is worth doing and it does not restart the six years. It changes an unpaid entry to a settled one, which an underwriter can tell apart immediately.

A dispute is not a negotiation with the creditor. If the debt is real and you want it gone, that is a conversation with the creditor, and it is separate from anything the bureau does.

If the answer comes back wrong

The record stands and you still disagree. There are three further routes, and they escalate.

Add a consumer statement
Both bureaus will attach a short statement of your own to the file. A human reading the file sees it; an automated cutoff does not. On a marginal application read by a person, it is worth having.
Go to the furnisher
The creditor reported it, so the creditor can correct it. This is often faster than a second dispute, particularly where you have a document they will recognise.
Escalate to the regulator
Credit reporting is provincially regulated, and each province's consumer affairs office takes complaints. The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada handles complaints about federally regulated financial institutions.

Applying while a dispute is open

Reasonable, and it needs saying because waiting is not always an option.

Say so in the application, name the account, and attach what you sent. A file that arrives explaining a wrong entry, with evidence, is read very differently from one where an underwriter finds the same entry unexplained.

Submitting an inquiry with Yes Auto does not trigger a hard credit pull on our end. However, once we match you with a dealer partner, that dealer or their lending institutions may perform a hard inquiry as part of the formal approval process.

An error you have documented is a much smaller problem than an error nobody has mentioned. What else an underwriter weighs alongside the report is on how it works.

It opens a file, not a phone tree. It goes to one dealer partner at a time, where a specialist reads it — never a list.
