Car financing after a repossession: what it does to a file, and applying again
What a repossession or voluntary surrender puts on a Canadian credit file, how long it stays, and what a car financing lender weighs after it.
A credit score is one input among several. What a Canadian vehicle lender weighs besides the score, in roughly the order it matters, and why files differ.

Two applications arrive with the same credit score. One is placed comfortably. The other is declined by the same program. This happens constantly, and the reason is that the score was never doing as much of the work as everyone assumes.
A number generated from what is on a credit file, weighted by a model, at a point in time. It compresses a file into one figure so that large volumes of applications can be sorted quickly.
Compression loses information. A score of a given value can come from a thin clean file, a long file with one serious problem in it, or a damaged file that has been recovering steadily for two years. Those are three completely different propositions and they can produce the same number.
An underwriter assessing a vehicle application is not reading the number. They are reading the file the number came from, and then everything the file does not contain.
Income, and whether it can be documented. The first real question is capacity. Not what is earned — what can be shown. Documented income is a fact; stated income is a claim. The gap between the two is where a large share of applications slow down. The list is in the documents to have ready.
Time at the current job. Duration reads as durability. A modest income held for three years is generally read more favourably than a larger one held for four months, and probation is a specific flag for several programs. Where employment recently changed within the same trade, continuity counts for something — say so rather than leaving the gap to be inferred.
Existing obligations. What is already committed each month against what comes in. A file with strong income and heavy existing commitments can be tighter than one with modest income and almost nothing out. This is the calculation people are most surprised by, because it has nothing to do with the score at all.
Time at the current address, and address history. Stability again, and a cross-check: the addresses in the application are compared against the credit file, and a discrepancy nobody explained becomes a question.
Recency of anything negative. Where there is damage on the file, when it happened matters more than how bad it was. Something from last quarter reads very differently from something from 2022, and that difference is usually larger than a difference of many score points.
What has happened since. An account opened after the trouble and paid on time for a year is the most useful single item that can be on a recovering file. It does not erase what is behind it; it gives the underwriter something to point at.
The amount being financed, against the vehicle. Loan-to-value. A file that is marginal against one amount can be comfortable against a smaller one, which is why a down payment or a trade-in moves some files across a line on its own. Covered in down payments and trade-ins.
Down payment or trade-in equity. Reduces the amount financed, improves the ratio, and demonstrates accumulated capacity — which is information the credit report does not contain.
Because the score is one input into criteria that have several, and programs weight them differently.
One lender program may screen hard on time at employment and be relaxed about older credit damage. Another may be the reverse. A third may not consider files with a particular kind of entry inside a window, whatever else is true. These criteria are not published, they change, and they differ between the lenders any one dealer works with.
That is the entire reason the matching step exists. A file is not good or bad in the abstract — it fits some programs and not others, and the useful work is finding out which, before an application is sent somewhere it was never going to be read.
A decline is often a statement about where the file was sent, not about the person who sent it.
Four things you can affect, none of which is the score:
The file goes automatically to one dealer partner, chosen from the answers in it. A specialist there reads the whole file — the score, and everything above — and works out which lender programs the situation actually fits.
Submitting an inquiry with Yes Auto does not trigger a hard credit pull on our end. However, once we match you with a dealer partner, that dealer or their lending institutions may perform a hard inquiry as part of the formal approval process.
We are not a lender and we do not approve or decline anything. What we are is the step that decides where the file goes, which on a marginal application is most of the outcome.
