What a lender weighs besides the credit score
A credit score is one input among several. What a Canadian vehicle lender weighs besides the score, in roughly the order it matters, and why files differ.
Credit history does not transfer to Canada. What lenders read instead for newcomers, which documents carry weight, and how permit expiry affects term length.

Credit history is national infrastructure and it does not travel. A file built over fifteen years with a bank in another country is invisible to Equifax Canada and TransUnion Canada, and to every lender reading them.
That is not a judgement about the person. It is a records problem, and records problems have documentary solutions.
A Canadian credit file begins when a Canadian creditor first reports on you. Not on landing, not on getting a SIN — on the first reported account.
So the file typically starts thin: one account, a few months old, possibly nothing at all. A score may not even be generated yet, and a file with no score is different from a file with a poor one. Some lender programs cannot process a no-score file at all, which is one of the specific reasons matching matters here more than usual.
Where the credit report has nothing to say, the assessment moves onto everything else. In rough order of how much weight each carries:
This is the mechanical constraint that catches people, and it is better known in advance.
Where status is temporary (a work permit or study permit with an expiry date), lenders look at that date against the length of the financing term. A term extending well past a permit expiry is a problem for some programs, and the response is usually a shorter term, a larger down payment, or a decline.
It is not universal. Programs differ, permanent residents are not affected by it at all, and a permit with a renewal already in progress is a different conversation from one expiring shortly with nothing filed.
The point is that it is a known variable with a known effect, and the application should state the status and the date rather than leave them to surface at underwriting.
Two things that are worth starting immediately, independent of any vehicle:
Six months of either produces a file. It does not produce a strong one, and it is the difference between a file that can be assessed and one that cannot.
An instalment account is the other half of a credit file and most newcomers do not have one. A vehicle loan paid on time builds exactly the history that is missing. That is set out in building credit with a car loan, including the two ways it goes the other way.
State the status, the permit expiry if there is one, the arrival date, and the employment situation directly. A file that presents these clearly is straightforward to place. A file where they have to be extracted is the one that takes a week longer for no reason.
Submitting an inquiry with Yes Auto does not trigger a hard credit pull on our end. However, once we match you with a dealer partner, that dealer or their lending institutions may perform a hard inquiry as part of the formal approval process.

What a repossession or voluntary surrender puts on a Canadian credit file, how long it stays, and what a car financing lender weighs after it.

The discharge is the date that matters. What it changes on a Canadian credit file, and what car financing looks like after one, document by document.
It opens a file, not a phone tree. It goes to one dealer partner at a time, where a specialist reads it — never a list.
Programs may vary by province. Approval is subject to lender review and application details.
