Using a tax refund as a car down payment

Using a tax refund as a car down payment: what a lender counts, when the money has to exist, and the filing dates that decide the timing.

A brown envelope and a calendar on a kitchen counter in February

Every February the same conversation happens. Somebody needs a vehicle, has nothing saved, and is about to receive the largest single deposit they will see all year. The question is whether to wait for it.

Usually yes, and not for the reason people assume. A refund used well does considerably more than reduce a payment, and a refund counted before it exists does real damage to an application. What a lender looks for when there is little or nothing down is set out on no down payment financing.

The dates that decide it

Filing opens in the last week of February, when the Canada Revenue Agency turns on NETFILE and EFILE — for the 2025 tax year that was 23 February 2026, with Auto-fill my return a fortnight earlier. Employers must issue T4 slips by the end of February, or the next business day when that falls on a weekend, as it did in 2026 (2 March). The filing deadline for most individuals is 30 April. The 2026 dates were last checked against the CRA on 8 August 2026; the CRA confirms each season's opening date early in the new year, and it is worth checking then.

The practical consequence: nothing can be filed before late February, most people will not hold a complete set of slips until early March, and a refund follows filing rather than the calendar. Electronic filing with direct deposit is substantially quicker than paper, which is the only timing lever an individual actually has.

What a lender does with a refund

Two different questions, and conflating them is where the trouble starts.

As income, a refund counts for very little. An underwriter is assessing capacity to make a payment every month for years. A once-yearly deposit does not demonstrate that, and a refund is in any case a return of your own over-withheld money rather than earnings. Do not enter it as income.

As a down payment, it counts fully, once it exists. Money in your account is money in your account, and its origin is not held against it. What matters is that it is there, cleared, and visible.

What documenting it actually looks like

Three months of statements is the usual ask, and underwriters read them for pattern rather than balance. A refund landing as a single CRA deposit is unambiguous and easy to read. A balance that appeared last week from an unexplained source is the opposite, and it invites the question of whether the money is borrowed.

So: let it land, let it sit through a statement cycle if the timeline allows, and keep the deposit visible rather than moving it between accounts. Where the money came from a family member instead, expect to be asked, and have the answer ready rather than the explanation.

The choice nobody offers you

A refund can go to a down payment, or it can go against a card sitting near its limit. On some files the second does more.

Utilisation — how much of an available limit is in use — is read on every credit file, and a card at or near its ceiling reads as pressure whether or not the payment is made every month. Clearing it changes what the report says about you. A down payment changes the arithmetic of one transaction. Which is worth more depends on the file, and it is a genuine question rather than a rhetorical one. How to see which situation you are in is in how to read your own credit report.

Where the file is already clean and the constraint is simply the amount financed, the down payment wins easily.

The timing that works

A sequence rather than a rule, and it fits the calendar above:

  1. Before February: get both credit reports, and correct anything wrong on them. A dispute takes about a month, so starting well before filing season means the file is right by the time a refund arrives. The route is in fixing an error on your credit report.
  2. Late February: file as soon as the slips are complete. Filing on opening day with a missing T4 is slower than filing a week later with everything.
  3. When it lands: leave it in the account it landed in.
  4. Then apply, with the money real, documented, and sitting in a statement anybody can read.

If the vehicle is needed before then, apply anyway and say what is coming. A file that states a modest documented position now is assessed on that. A file that states an optimistic one is assessed twice.

What a down payment does and does not do

Worth restating, because February optimism runs ahead of it. Money down reduces the amount financed, improves the ratio of the loan to the value of the vehicle, and demonstrates capacity to accumulate, which a credit report cannot show. It does not repair credit history, and it does not move a file into a program it falls outside on other grounds.

Submitting an inquiry with Yes Auto does not trigger a hard credit pull on our end. However, once we match you with a dealer partner, that dealer or their lending institutions may perform a hard inquiry as part of the formal approval process.

A refund is one of the few moments in a year when the amount financed can be changed materially rather than argued about. Spending it before it arrives is the one way to waste it.
