Why one dealer, not thirty: how car loan applications are sold to dealers

How lead resale works in Canadian car loans, what it does to the applications sold through it, and why we send one file to one dealer instead.

A single envelope on a sorting table

This is the part of the industry nobody writes down, so it is worth writing down. It also explains most of what is odd about this website — why nothing here quotes you a rate or a payment, the exclusivity, the fact that we tell you when a record opens.

How lead generation normally sells a car loan application

A business generates vehicle financing applications through advertising. It sells them to dealerships. The dealership pays per application received.

The arithmetic that follows is not subtle. An application sold to one dealer earns one fee. The same application sold to five dealers earns five. The cost of generating it does not change. So the incentive is to sell each file as many times as it can be sold.

From the dealer's side, an application bought alongside four competitors is worth considerably less than an exclusive one — you are calling someone who has already been called, and the first caller has the advantage. Dealers know this, so they pay less. Which pushes the generator to sell more copies to make the same revenue. Which makes each copy worth less again.

That loop has a direction and the industry has been travelling along it for years.

What it does to the applicant

Three things, all of which land on the person who filled in the form.

The phone. One application, several dealers, each calling. People describe this as being called for a month by companies they have never heard of, and they are not exaggerating — they are describing the mechanism working as designed.

The credit file. Each dealer that receives the file may run it with their own lenders. Each of those can be a hard inquiry. The applicant authorised one application and the file ends up carrying a run of inquiries, which is itself a factor the next lender reads. The detail is in hard and soft inquiries.

For our own part, so that this section is not making a claim by implication:

Submitting an inquiry with Yes Auto does not trigger a hard credit pull on our end. However, once we match you with a dealer partner, that dealer or their lending institutions may perform a hard inquiry as part of the formal approval process.

The quality of attention. A file that arrives as one of a batch gets triaged. A file that arrives exclusively gets read. That difference is invisible from the outside and it determines almost everything about what happens next.

What we do instead

One application goes to one dealer partner at a time. It does not go on a list, it is never with more than one dealer at once, and if a match does not work out we look again rather than broadcasting it.

That is worth more to each dealer, which is why they pay us for it, which is the only reason the model works at all. We are not doing this because it is nice. We are doing it because a smaller number of well-matched exclusive files is a business, and a large number of cheap duplicated ones is a race we would lose to somebody with a bigger ad budget.

The incentive that pays us is the same one that makes a specialist read the file properly. That alignment is the product.

What that costs us, honestly

Two things, and they are the reason most competitors do not do it.

We make less per application. Obviously — one fee instead of several.

And we have to be right about the match. A file sent to a dealer whose lender relationships do not fit it wastes the applicant's week and burns our relationship with that dealer. A business selling to thirty dealers does not have that exposure; being wrong is somebody else's problem. Being wrong is our problem, which is why each file is matched on the answers in it and then read by a person at the dealer before any lender sees it.

How we are paid, precisely

Per application, a flat amount, from the dealer. Not a share of the financing. Not a fee tied to the rate, the term, or what you end up paying.

That matters because it removes the incentive that makes this category uncomfortable. We have nothing to gain from you buying more vehicle than you came for, nothing to gain from a longer term, and no interest in the structure of the agreement. Those are the dealer's conversation and the lender's decision, and we are not in either of them.

Why the rest of the site looks the way it does

Because the same logic applies to everything else.

Nothing on this site quotes you a rate or a payment, because nobody can know yours before a lender has reviewed the application, and a number offered before that is a guess you end up holding. The car loan calculator works through figures you choose yourself, with the market's rate range and a worked example beside it. It is arithmetic, not an offer. We are not AMVIC-licensed and we do not sell vehicles, so you will not find inventory here either, or a price attached to one — taking the application and handing the file to a dealer who does sell them is the whole of what we do.

Every one of those is a constraint. Working inside them produces a site that says less and means more of it, which is the trade we would make anyway.

Start your application

It opens a file, not a phone tree. It goes to one dealer partner at a time, where a specialist reads it — never a list.

Programs may vary by province. Approval is subject to lender review and application details.
